Fishing Seasons in Key West
Winter Time
Saying "winter" in Key West can be a stretch. We don't usually get that cold here. The fishing can be great with a mixed bag of species that are more cold tolerant than some. These fish include Jacks, Trout, Permit, Pompano, Bluefish, Mackeral, and many more. Depending on how cold it does get, we still may have some of the usual suspects like Tarpon and Bonefish.
Tarpon Season (Spring)
Tarpon Season starts some time in March with a slow trickle of eager fish making there way here. Tarpon come up from the South on their yearly migration and stop through Key West before continuing the journey up both coasts of Florida. In May, we are in full swing and there are numerous fish throughout our waters. This is one of the best times of the year. When July comes, the last of the fish start moving North and make way for the juveniles that we love to target.
Summer and Fall
This time of year can be slow around the island, but fire on the water. These are some of the best months for pure sight fishing on the flats. Crystal clear water with more good weather days than bad. There are Bonefish a plenty and Permit have made their way back from the spawn.

TESTIMONIALS
Testimonials
"Most fun I’ve had in Key West! - Captain Brian was the best! We started out spot fishing for bonefish, we saw plenty... but my lack of skill with the rod made it a bit difficult to land one. Not to worry though, Captain Brian moved us to a new location to fish for barracuda, something that requires a little less skill. We caught a few of those, then a giant school of tarpon moved in. We quickly switched to live bait and chased and casted for tarpon the rest of the trip. He told us when to cast, reel, and lift the rod. All we had to do to land the fish was listen. He was also great about pointing out other fish and wildlife. Captain Brian was super nice, a fun guy to hang out with and he definitely knows his stuff!"Jessie Privett
"Had a great time - I went out fishing with Capt. Brian looking to do some fly fishing for bonefish. He took me to the right spots and although I missed quite a few casts I was able successfully land one. We also had plenty of shots at tarpon and barracuda. His pleasant demeanor, great boat, and wonderful sense of humor made the trip very enjoyable. I look forward to fishing with him again."John Hoover
"Best fishing trip ever! - We booked an inshore fishing trip with Low Key Angling as part of our anniversary trip to Key West. Our bucket list item for the trip was to land a few bonefish and tarpon in the flats around the Keys. Our first cast on rod and reel landed us our first of many bonefish of the day and the last cast landed us my husband's very first tarpon. Captain Brian's knowledge of the region and his awesome green boat got us into the shallow waters around the islands. We spotted a variety of fish including barracuda, blacktip sharks, sea turtles and rainbow runners. We will book another fishing trip with Low Key Angling on our next Florida Keys vacation!"Liz Johnson
"Outfished by my girl! - Our experience with Brian was awesome! We had set species we wanted to target and we did just that! My girlfriend had only caught a couple fish in her lifetime and at the very start of the day he said, “we will more than double your species caught list” and that was accomplished. Great company, great conversations and a great day on the water!"Daniel Spears
"On the money. - We fished with Captain Brian Stilley for 2 days in May. Was terrific. we asked for tarpon he not only put us on tarpon we boated tarpon. We asked for permit he put us on Permit, We asked for barracuda he got us hooked up with barracuda. We asked for snapper for supper he stopped off on the way in and we caught snapper which he prepared for us and we took to a local restaurant for dinner. We fished with other skippers during our ten day trip but Captain Brian was the best. We only changed because our party increased on the 3rd day and we had to find a skipper with a bigger boat. Which he helped us with. Captain Brian is a friendly, helpful, likeable guy and an excellent skipper and guide and I recomend him unreservedly. he is the real deal and was not only able to put us on plenty of fish but we caught plenty too."Steve Horrocks
"Incredible experience! I had the time of my life and can't wait to hire Capt Stilley again! - Capt. Stilley of Low Key Angling took me out tarpon fishing. I am NOT an angler by any means as I NEVER fish. Capt. Stilley had me out on the water for no more than an hour before I hooked into a massive tarpon! He helped me through the entire 90 minute fight to bring it in! He's a great guy and he knows what he's doing. I can't recommend him enough for any type of fishing you want to do. A++++"Ryan Stalheim
"My wife and I are not very experienced at salt water fishing, but we were lucky to hook up with Brian for a couple of days of backwater fishing in the Keys last year. To say that this experience was the highlight of our week in Key West would be a gross understatement. Knowing that we were relative beginners, and that we were less interested in trophy fishing, and more interested in the positive reinforcement one gains from “catching as many fish as possible”, he spent great care taking us to the shallow backcountry waters where he knew we’d catch our fill of snappers, jacks, and ladyfish. He also showed my wife how to fish the shallows for barracudas, and she caught two of them in less than 30 minutes! He found us a quiet channel where my wife literally hooked a fish every couple of minutes for close to an hour. Brian really knows how to connect with people, and my wife literally talks about her two days with Brian as if he’s related to us. We cannot wait for our next charter with Brian, and not simply because he is a great charter captain, but because it is so much fun spending a day on the water with him. We could not recommend Brian more highly if you are heading to Key West, and are looking for someone who really understands the nuances of sport fishing in the Keys."Doug & Joani Griffith
"Awesome day out on the water! Booked a day out with Captain Brian and had a great time. He put us on tarpon, bonefish, and had an exciting chase after some tailing permit to end the day. He’s very knowledgeable, not only about the fishing, but about the local ecosystems and it was fun to pick his brain and learn more about the area. He’s professional and easygoing. The Keys are lucky to have him."Tommy Danahy
"Captain Brian was the best! We are not fisherman as a matter of fact we hadn’t fished in years. Brian was very patient, professional and had us catching fish in no time. We caught a wide variety of fish including sea trout, lady fish, and pompano. Some we kept as bait fish for the grand finale 1 Black Tip and 1 Lemon Shark. Great Trip for 2 non fishermen."Allyson Avera
"Brian was awesome. My buddies 50th b-day and Brian didn’t disappoint. We hooked up on a great Tarpon. I’m hooked (first time). As you can see caught many different species of fish. The wife’s were happy that we caught dinner as well. Great Cobia 30 lbs. Thanks again Brian for a great day. See you again soon. "Chris Kelly
